During my extraordinary month of classic car events here in Italy, I had the privilege of previewing Maserati’s stunning new Mostro coupe two days before its public debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The private reception rook place in Milan at the former Alfa Romeo test track, now a private driving club course.

The Mostro was created to celebrate Maserati’s 100th anniversary. The inspiration is the iconic “Costin Coupe” — the closed 450S sports racing car built for Le Mans in 1957. Designed by aerodynamicist Frank Costin, the Costin Coupe came into existence at the request of Stirling Moss.

The 2015 Mostro powered by Maserati features a carbon-fiber “MonoCell” combined with a structure of narrow-diameter steel tubing covered with carbon fiber bodywork. A dry-sump Maserati V8 is mid-front mounted and paired with a rear-mounted semi-automatic 6-speed gearbox for optimal weight distribution.

This new Zagato creation will be made in a small series of five, all already sold. Deliveries will be completed by December 2015.
