Sports Car Market holds a reception at Retromobile every year, usually has 40 to 50 subscribers in attendance. It was double this last night. With over a 100 SCMer’s plus a few guests, this reception was one for the blogs – and really, the free wine and food had nothing to do with it! By the time the reception started at 5:30 (17:30 for you Europeans) there was a long line of people checking in.
The event was sponsored by Ed Fallon’s Cave Creek Classics and Donald Osborne’s Automotive Valuation Services, along with Sports Car Market and American Car Collector. Donald was the host of the event, and graciously welcomed everyone, including SCM publisher (and my dad) Keith Martin, his wife Wendie, and SCM contributors Robert Cumberford and Ken Gross.
Half way through the event, it was time to give away some must have SCM deluxe key chains. There were three awards, for the person who traveled the furthest, who lived the closest and who owned the oldest French car.
SCMer’s Steven Tillack (Tillack Restorations) and Karen Sundstorm (Dream Rides 4 Kids Foundation) from Redondo Beach, CA came the farthest, beating out another SCMer by one block (“we’re closer to the beach than they are”).
SCMer Charles Lemaitre from Hardwick, Massachusetts won the oldest car award, a 1911 Rothschild 7 liter double chain driven town car. Charles has been a subscriber since the Alfa Market Letter days. The French SCMer who won living the closest took off in a Parisian flash after receiving his keychain before I could get his information – but he mentioned that he had walked to Retromobile.
The Wednesday reception was a great way to start this car week and we can’t wait to see what the next few days have in store for us! If you see us wandering around (look for the SCM lapel pins), please come say hi and tell us your story as well as point us in the general direction of the Bonhams or Artcurial auctions since we will most likely be lost.
